Choosing the right screws for your project can be confusing, so let's take a look at the most common screws and how to apply them to your DIY project.

This is the screw you will use the most. The top of the cutting screw has a smooth shank (without thread). When connecting the plates together, the smooth shank is used to pull the back plate tightly to the front plate.

The use of smooth shank screws ensures a tight connection without the need for glue. The cutting screw has a square drive head, and every package you buy contains a square drill bit.

Since particleboard is not a solid board and is easily broken, the particleboard screws are designed to provide greater grip. Particleboard screws have a pozidriv head, so always use the right size pozi bit ("PZ") for your project. For screws from 3.5mm to 5mm, PZ2 is the correct PZ bit to use.

The size of the galvanized particleboard screws for smaller projects ranges from 3.0 x 16 mm to 4.0 x 20 mm. These screws are fully threaded because they are used for general fastening of hinges, brackets and hooks, not for connecting parts together.

All of the above screws have a countersunk head, which means you need to use a countersunk bit on hardwood and planks to ensure that the screw head is flush or just below the surface of the material used. – Property24
